“Dr. Ana Gomes has been a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner since June of 2018. She has worked in various settings consisting of seasonal, residential, outpatient, inpatient, and government facilities.”
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I treat psychiatric clients across the lifespan who have complex mood and anxiety disorders, comorbid substance use disorders, dual diagnoses, eating disorders, psychosis, or PTSD. I share a passion for global public health and disaster medicine, which assists me in treating a diverse clientele. I place an emphasis on treating the whole person by incorporating a holistic approach to treatment with psychopharmacology.
What should someone know about working with you?
Since 2017, I have volunteered with multiple NGOs, including the American Red Cross and Medical Reserve Corps, providing disaster medicine and mental health support across the country. I take pride in my second passion in life (global public health) and have volunteered in five out of seven continents since 2014, including a trip to El Salvador in February 2020. My mission is to provide preventative care and education on public health, ultimately decreasing the stigma surrounding mental illness. I currently work at Lowell General Hospital as a PMHNP, providing inpatient psychiatric consults and evaluations in the emergency department. I’m also the founder and CEO of New England Psychiatry LLC©.
Have you done any research-based work that you found particularly exciting? How does it inform your practice today?
While practicing as a PMHNP on the North Shore, I pursued a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. My capstone was focused on a mobile self-care application for transition to practice providers. I graduated with honors in 2020.
