What was your path to becoming a therapist?
Becoming a therapist was always a life goal for me; from a young age, I was surrounded by people specializing in the field of psychology, which led to a better understanding and appreciation of psychotherapy and the human brain. Helping people has also always been a priority. Growing up on the small island of Cyprus, we valued kindness and empathy toward everyone. With these core values, a career as a psychotherapist was an easy choice and has proven to be a fulfilling life choice. Throughout my career as a therapist, I have worked in outpatient facilities for mental health and substance use, interned in a psychiatric hospital, and worked in private practice. I have also completed training in acceptance and commitment therapy and obtained a postgraduate certificate in addiction. In my practice today, I incorporate CBT and mindfulness techniques to help my clients better understand and replace ineffective patterns.
What should someone know about working with you?
Creating a safe and supportive environment to explore the origins of undesirable behaviors, understand relationship dynamics, and remove current obstacles is a priority of mine during therapy. My intake process is simple and interactive and progress involves acquiring better tools to cope with anxiety and depression, improve relationships, and change the way we view ourselves. Homework is sometimes assigned depending on each client’s needs and goals for therapy.
What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?
Ongoing learning and staying up-to-date with new research are essential in the counseling field. I have recently completed postmaster’s training at NYU, and I am constantly reading and acquiring new information in order to stay informed on new practices and tools in the field of therapy and psychology. I also regularly attend peer supervision with colleagues and other providers of various specialties to gain better insight and acquire feedback that can help me evolve as a clinician.
