Profile
“We all long to be heard and understood; my mission is to provide a safe place where the burdens of life can be shed and a more positive perspective can be gained.”
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
As a child, I dreamed of being a ballerina and was drawn to the arts. I started out as a dance major in college but soon realized how much I loved engaging in relationships. The classes I loved the most were on psychology and anthropology. As a young adult, my focus was on starting my own family and my journey to becoming a therapist slowed down. But as my children grew older, I finished my graduate studies in social work. My first job after achieving my MSW was in early childhood as a parent and child therapist. In my career as a clinician, I have worked in various hospital and agency settings, primarily gaining experience in helping people with social, emotional, psychological, and substance abuse problems.
What should someone know about working with you?
In your first session with me, I will take a psychosocial history of your life so that I can get to know you and not miss anything important in assessing your treatment needs. Early on, we decide what your goals are for our work together. As we engage in accomplishing your goals, I follow your lead in what you are ready to address and the order of importance in what you wish to work on. If you want ideas and strategies based on research and experience, I share them with you. If you want homework, I am happy to provide homework and ideas toward reaching your goals. We all long to be heard and understood; my mission is to provide a safe place where the burdens of life can be shed and a more positive perspective can be gained. It is gratifying for me when my clients trust the therapeutic process and transform in a direction that is happier and more fulfilling.
What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?
I am passionate about and enjoy learning how to be the best therapist I can be. My emphasis has been on gaining skills in research-based methods of relationship counseling and I also simultaneously have worked on skills for overcoming trauma. I adore the pragmatic relationship skills of the Gottman Method and have seen many clients transform as a result of being provided new perspectives for healthier relationships. As a trauma-informed therapist, I strive to learn the most effective techniques for healing the wounds of trauma. I am trained in EMDR, a method for helping overcome the pain of trauma, but I am always researching for my own greater understanding and ability to provide other proven therapeutic methods.
