What was your path to becoming a therapist?
Every experience has value and meaning; the possibility of transformation is within all of us. My path to becoming a psychotherapist began many years ago when I worked as a muralist. Inspired by my clients, I painted their stories onto their walls. One day, I had an “aha” moment and realized that to be truly heard, understood, and seen, people must be allowed to be the author and narrator of their own story through their own voice and while witnessed by a trusted other. Since 2006, I have trained, worked, and taught in a myriad of clinical settings across New York as a creative arts therapist and a clinical social worker. I continue to study and advance my craft through specialized evidence-based relational training and certifications, such as EFT (emotionally-focused therapy) and IPT (interpersonal therapy). Now, it is my great privilege to accompany you on your own journey of guided self-discovery. After all, isn’t it all about the relationship?
What should someone know about working with you?
We are all uniquely equipped with our own strengths, talents, and complexities, informed by past and present experiences. My approach to therapy encourages the exploration of who we are at our core, shaped by our early childhood attachments that determine the style in which we communicate our needs and longings. Through empathic self-reflection, I will safely connect you to your inner truths as a way to navigate life authentically and intentionally while building richer, gentler, and more meaningful connections with yourself and others. My own life experiences as well as my experience as a practicing clinician working, training, teaching, and supervising others for over 15 years have taught me the importance of exploring our distinctive and respecting differing world views in a culturally-sensitive and collaborative way. Through each stage of treatment (from intake all the way through termination), I will sensitively support and empower you to lead the way toward achieving your desired life goals.
How do your own core values shape your approach to therapy?
I view psychotherapy as a deeply personal process and one that is transformative. It takes a lot of courage to reach out for help and finding the right therapist is crucial to your success. To achieve success, one must be supported by people they trust and allowed to find their life’s purpose, access their inner passions, and appreciate the wisdom that can only be informed through past failures. Trust, respect, acceptance, mutuality, and empathy are foundational. It is my job to create that space where you feel heard, validated, and witnessed so that you can be your most authentic self. My role is to assist you in developing greater insight and self-awareness and help you voice your truth bravely and proudly. I am not the expert on your life (only you are) nor do I provide the answers, but we can co-create new ways of thinking, feeling, and being. The moment that you decide you are ready to make shifts in your life is a moment bursting with possibilities.
What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?
In the past, stigma was a barrier that prevented people from accessing mental health services, even when within reach. But now, speaking with a trained professional no longer implies a serious problem, victimization, trauma, or a mental illness. We have found new, creative, and dynamic individualized approaches to treatment, whether these be through traditional in-person sessions, remote telehealth practices (which might alleviate initial feelings of discomfort), or some combination of both. I am optimistic that the future will bring forth greater ways of healing and growth, and that the hardships felt as a result of shared experiences will foster a climate of equity, acceptance, flexibility, and collective empowerment.
