“My approach is warm, down-to-earth, and transparent.”
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I've been drawn to the field of mental health ever since childhood when I struggled to make sense of my own thoughts and feelings and those of people around me. I sought therapy for the first time in college but struggled to find the right counselor and therapy approach until I found a certified gestalt therapist in my mid-20s. Not only did this therapist help me navigate my own experiences with more awareness and grace, but she became the inspiration to me becoming a gestalt therapist myself. I have since completed a four-year postgraduate training in gestalt psychotherapy and am honored to provide my clients with the same type of support that transformed my life.
What should someone know about working with you?
My approach is warm, down-to-earth, and transparent. As a gestalt therapist, our focus will be free-form with a sharp attunement to what emerges in the here-and-now between us in session. We will explore not only your thoughts and feelings but the (often hidden) judgments and reaction you have toward them. I am active within the session, often offering experiments to deepen your emotional experience and/or provide grounding and support when strong emotions arise. I believe that our feelings evolved for a reason and that everything we feel has an important message. Our work is to learn to tolerate and embrace these feelings so that we can leverage them to better navigate our lives. Free phone consultations are conducted prior to arranging the first session. During this consultation, we will explore your goals and how I can assist in meeting them and then discuss next steps for setting up the first appointment.
How do your own core values shape your approach to therapy?
The bulk of my career prior to private practice was focused on providing mental health services to individuals living with severe mental illness, criminal justice involvement, and homelessness. Throughout this time, it became clear that our individual struggles cannot be divorced from the socioeconomic circumstances in which we all live (even if my role is to work primarily on the level of the individual). As such, it is vitally important for us to acknowledge the role of race, gender, and other demographic factors on our individual experiences of wellness or struggle. I strive to create a safe space where clients can explore their position in our wider culture while bringing awareness to how inequality and bias can impact individual experiences of mental health or struggle.
