What was your path to becoming a coach? What inspired you to choose this profession?
Growing up as the child of a sick parent, my sense of safety was compromised at a very young age. The result was an overactive state of fight or flight. My sympathetic nervous system was prepared for danger 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This heightened state of being had devastating effects on the quality of my health. Since then, walking the “path of healing” has been the greatest joy in my life. Through psychology, neuroscience, mind-body work, and deep introspection on the human condition, my initial story of fear and sickness transformed into one of health, vitality, and hope. I believe in our innate ability to self-heal, to be comfortable within our bodies, and to relieve even the greatest suffering. It is my life’s mission to bring healing and support to others who have been in the throes of trauma.
What would you want someone to know about working with you?
Reclaiming control over your health and self after years of conditioning is deeply courageous and life-changing. My clients relax both physically and mentally in a solution-oriented, safe, and supportive environment. By exploring the innate connection between brain, body, and behavior, my clients first begin treatment by exploring mindfulness and the role of thought patterns on their physical body. I work with each client to optimize the brain-body connection and prep the body for healing by deactivating the nervous system. Through simple lifestyle changes and the adoption of behavioral and nutritional science techniques, clients begin the great journey of healing through the mind and body.
If there was one thing you wish people knew about the coaching experience who might be hesitant to try it, what would that be?
Prioritizing our emotional health is the most honoring and self-loving thing we can do. The reward is invaluable and the effect will echo. But we are not wired to do this alone. I coach my clients on the importance of building a support system. This can include friends, family, literature, rituals, and safe spaces, or this could be mentors, teachers, medical professionals, and coaches. We live in a world with physical and digital resources to help us thrive mentally and physically. One is not better than the other and, at times, parts of our system will come to fail us. Understanding this and being able to gracefully redirect and call on other areas of the system is what it means to restore your power. What excites you most about the evolving mental health landscape?
Access is improving, technology is adapting, entrepreneurs are receiving funding, and, at the client level, treatment is being revolutionized. Outdated symptom-focused models are being replaced with comprehensive treatments that address mind, body, and soul. Care is becoming trauma-informed and all-inclusive at last. The role that board-certified medical coaching plays in the evolution of mental healthcare is also exciting. Researchers confirm that successful change comes in stages: First, analysis of behavior is done in psychotherapy, giving us a why. Next, coaching answers the how: how to move forward, how to change self-destructive habit loops, how to navigate from A to B. Habit change is extremely challenging work and the new medical paradigm positions coaching as invaluable in the revolution of healthcare.
Is there any research-based work you’ve done that you found particularly exciting and how has that informed your practice today?
I started researching mind-body therapies, the gut-brain connection, and vagal nerve stimulation more than 10 years ago. These modalities have a striking impact on our parasympathetic nervous system and should absolutely supplement first lines of treatment like talk therapy and medication. Luckily, specialists and coaches are well-versed in modalities like diet, exercise, sleep health, breathing techniques, yoga science, and meditation. Through Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk and his revolutionary book “The Body Keeps The Score,” we know that trauma stores itself deep within the body. Children and adults are dissociating at an alarming rate due to stress, abuse, and cultural pressures. To feel safe within your body is a human right; however it was unjustly taken away, safety is always possible to reclaim. It is my goal as a healing practitioner and functional medicine coach to repair the mind-body connection.
