What was your path to becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist?
Before obtaining a master's degree in marriage and family therapy, I worked as an attorney and jurist in the New York City family courts with individuals, couples, and families experiencing relationship conflict. In those roles, I often felt constrained by an overburdened legal system that necessarily emphasized expediency over change and growth. I eventually realized that I could better serve those who were actively seeking change for themselves and in their relationships by becoming a therapist. I decided to specialize in marriage and family therapy so I would be trained to work with a broader range of clients. Throughout my life, I have often been described by others as curious and compassionate; I feel those qualities allow me to help my clients go deeper and discover more about themselves in a safe space.
What should someone know about working with you?
I consider the therapeutic relationship to be one of the most important relationships that we create. I believe that all individuals can effect change in their lives and I feel it’s a privilege to earn the trust of my clients and help guide them in that change through a collaborative relationship. Recognizing that one-size-does-not-fit-all and that each client has unique needs, strengths, and resources, I help my clients create their therapeutic goals and use a variety of techniques to assist them in meeting those goals. Therapy sessions, usually just 45 minutes a week, often feel too brief so I frequently give my clients homework between sessions to increase the benefits of therapy. I know clients are ready to leave therapy when the concerns that brought them in have shifted or disappeared and they are able to use the tools they have learned in therapy in their daily lives.
How do your core values shape your approach to care?
I grew up in a warm and loving but conservative multigenerational Irish and Italian American family. As we became young adults, my parents stepped out of family tradition and encouraged us to learn about ourselves and the world in a broader way. It was still a journey, however, to find and feel confident using my own voice. As a therapist, I actively encourage my clients to find and listen to their own inner voices to guide them, which empowers clients to construct their own identities and personal narratives.
Which of your favorite quotes best reveals your therapeutic approach?
“Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.” - Andy Rooney. Clients often ask how long they will need to be in therapy. My consistent answer is, “It depends.” Each client has a unique therapeutic journey; some are brief while others are longer. Therapy is a process designed for healing and growth. Often, behaviors and concerns that bring clients to therapy developed over long periods of time and can take time to understand and change. My goal as a therapist isn’t to tell my clients how to get to the top of the mountain but to guide them on the journey there.
