“My own journey in therapy taught me how helpful it is to be truly seen by a therapist who can help you better understand yourself and gain insight into how the past influences the way we think and feel and the choices we make.”
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
After graduating from college in 2002, I joined Teach For America. While I enjoyed being part of a helping profession, I found myself drawn to wanting to help students, parents, and fellow teachers in a different way — by supporting them in understanding their feelings and helping them to manage their stress. I decided to pursue my master’s degree and became a licensed mental health counselor. My experience in various agencies throughout New York City ultimately led me to find my passion in working with adults and supporting them through their challenges. My own journey in therapy taught me how helpful it is to be truly seen by a therapist who can help you better understand yourself and gain insight into how the past influences the way we think and feel and the choices we make.
What should someone know about working with you?
My therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, and filled with compassion and curiosity for your thoughts and feelings. I believe in the importance of building a trusting relationship in order for therapy to be effective. I provide a safe space for you to share whatever you want to share, whether it be something that happened during the week or something you’ve been thinking about from your past. I’m here to listen, without judgment, and ask you questions along the way to help you get a better understanding of your thoughts and feelings. I often work with clients who want to learn more about their relationships and explore patterns in their lives. I might help you make connections, offer another perspective, or offer a helpful tool for coping.
If there was one thing you wish hesitant people knew about therapy, what would it be?
It is so important to find the right fit with a therapist. If you’ve had an unpleasant experience in therapy before or, if after a consultation you get a sense that something is off, follow your gut and don’t give up on your search. Feeling comfortable is a top priority! Also, it’s okay to come to your therapy sessions without an issue. Therapy can be a place where you can share your successes and be seen for your strengths.
