Profile
“I like clients who are independently motivated with a desire to exceed their expectations and a willingness to take responsibility.”
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I graduated from San Jose State University with a business degree in management information systems. I then played professional minigolf tours, caddied professionally, and joined the LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals. Everyone used to come to their lessons with personal issues and I wanted to be a sport psychology consultant so I went on to get my MA in sport psychology.
What should someone know about working with you?
My ideal clients are those who want to perform or be better in just about anything. I don’t work with one category of people because I embrace people from all walks of life and it is my passion to meet new people. I like clients who are independently motivated with a desire to exceed their expectations and a willingness to take responsibility. I want clients who feel 'stuck' at their present level and have tried many ways to get 'unstuck' to no avail, as I truly appreciate the challenge. I use a variety of empirically-based approaches that I have been working on in mental health therapy, hypnotherapy, and sport psychology for the past 28 years. I also rely on cognitive behavioral therapy, Jungian psychology, and the Bible!
What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?
I continue to take professional courses and read books that spur my passion and growth. I love human potential!
How do your core values shape your approach to therapy?
I have been rich and poor and everything in between. I can relate to just about anyone and I have worked with clients from all over the world and every walk of life. I am interested in cultural differences and would love to hear about them, validate them, and make them your strengths.
What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?
I am most excited about where God is taking us.
Have you done any research-based work that you found particularly exciting? How does it inform your practice today?
I have a personal relationship with the Lord and have studied Christian psychology intensely. I did my thesis on golf and hypnotherapy and one of my clients claimed it saved his life! I choose subjects based on my own life's journey and plan to continue finishing my doctorate in clinical psychology, but the statistics class is a challenge for me!
