What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I have been in the field of mental health for over 24 years and working as a therapist since 2002. I incorporated leadership and mental performance coaching into my practice to help my clients improve their ability to perform at optimal levels. I also realized that the mind's natural ability to heal required equal attention to one's physical and spiritual health, so I adopted a more holistic approach to working with my clients. I merged two decades of experience in mental health and my Christian faith and values with specialized training in nutrition, fitness, and integrative and complementary medicine to form a process that can truly trigger internal and lasting change for my clients. I recently released my first book, Confront Your Comfort, Excel in Your Press: Reaching Your Why, Your Vision & Your Victorious Place, which I often use as a therapeutic guide throughout the change process.
What should someone know about working with you?
I am an influencer who naturally coaches my clients toward change and therefore, I will challenge you. You will be expected to go deep and apply the skills learned in our sessions and through various homework assignments. Your level of investment in the process will determine your outcome. I believe that true happiness stems from one's comfort in identifying their authentic self and walking out their God-given purpose. Without true understanding of your "why", you may be finding yourself sick, stressed, emotionally labile, and unable to perform at optimal levels. My ideal client is the mom who has given up her own dreams to meet the needs of her family, the entrepreneur or exec who was knocked off track because of some unexpected life event, the athlete who was always defined by his/her physical talent but never able to express other God-given gifts and talents, and the young adult who simply needs direction as he/she enters the next season of their journey.
What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?
In every situation, I look for the good! COVID-19 truly disrupted our world but the positive impact it had on wellness, in general, truly excites me. People are now much more invested in taking care of themselves and addressing their physical, spiritual, and mental health needs. More specifically, the pandemic forced the mental health landscape to evolve. With the increased acceptance of telehealth, so many of the previous barriers to access have been eliminated! That beautiful mix of DESIRE and ACCESS makes CHANGE possible...and that excites me!
Have you done any research-based work that you found particularly exciting? How does it inform your practice today?
My research has been very centered around two perceivably different but highly complimentary topics: Leadership and holistic approaches to improving mental health. Most high-functioning entrepreneurs, execs, athletes, and moms ignore their own needs in their quest for success in their respective area of influence. As a result, they often find themselves unfulfilled, physically ill, mentally drained, and unable to perform. I've established a unique, comprehensive approach for leaders and influencers to reignite their passion and their mind’s natural resiliency and ability to heal while preventing and treating common mental health concerns. I am certified in integrative medicine for mental health and dynamical neurofeedback, so I combine evidence-based holistic approaches (e.g., nutritional and herbal medicine, fitness, passive brain training, and mindset coaching) with traditional CBT and mindfulness techniques that truly help my clients reach optimal mental performance.
What types of people should seek you out for therapy?
If you are a high-functioning stay-at-home-mom, young adult in transition to adulthood, professional, leader, entrepreneur, or athlete looking to identify your "why", improve your mood and behavior, overcome stress and anxiety, increase cognitive function, and/or eliminate mental blocks, I am the therapist for you!
