Profile
“I believe strongly in giving yourself a chance to grow, learning about who you are, and taking the time to do so even when others question it.”
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I have been in counseling since a debacle in my college anatomy class and have never looked back. I have worked in hospital settings, adult education programs, and nonprofit settings. I have treated various ages, from children to seniors, which taught me various skills. The most important thing I learned is that everyone is different and every story is unique and must be handled that way. Clients are unique and different and that's what I like about being a therapist; it allows me to be unique and different too.
What should someone know about working with you?
Working with me is about being open to the process of understanding that life is full of ups and downs. There are moments of progress and regress but it’s all about learning who you are and what you need to move forward. I give assignments so that learning continues outside of our session. I like clients who are open to trying new things and honest when things are not feeling right.
How do your core values shape your approach to therapy?
As a Jamaican woman, I have already broken so many barriers in my family alone and it is that knowledge that pushes me in this field. It’s powerful to know that learning about you, your past, and your present can change the direction of your life. I believe strongly in giving yourself a chance to grow, learning about who you are, and taking the time to do so even when others question it. Personal growth and mental health can be foreign concepts in many cultures but it can be an AWESOME process for the individual that embarks on the journey.
