“I previously worked for a financial company and through their encouragement I began volunteering at a bereavement camp for children; this changed my life and led me to become a therapist.”
What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I previously worked for a financial company and through their encouragement I began volunteering at a bereavement camp for children; this changed my life and led me to become a therapist. I feel that I have always been a warm, empathetic, and open person. I was raised to be kind and accept others as they are. I believe that these fundamental values have been the foundation for my success as a therapist. I have worked at a continuing day program that focused on adults with severe and persistent mental illness and I currently work at a large outpatient clinic that serves a diverse population. This has provided me with the ability to work with individuals experiencing a variety of difficulties, which has given me well-rounded expertise. Continuing education is something that I am passionate about as it allows me to keep up-to-date with changes in our field and gain new strategies to help my clients.
What should someone know about working with you?
I offer a brief consultation to review the client's needs and mutually decide if I am a good fit for them. The initial session focuses on discussing their history, presenting issues, and goals. Depending on the approach used weekly, action plans may be assigned. I work with adolescents (15+) and adults of any age.
What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?
I prefer to attend conferences and workshops as it allows me to collaborate with other professionals in the field. I also do online courses.
How do your own core values shape your approach to therapy?
I have always been an open-minded and kind person and I believe this allows me to connect with a diverse range of individuals.
What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?
I’m most excited about greater access for clients as telehealth has developed the possibility of using technology within the therapeutic process.
