What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I have always enjoyed people and learning about how we think and behave. Throughout my life, I have had others share that they felt completely at ease with me and were comfortable opening up and discussing their private issues and concerns. I experienced some health struggles and tough times early in life and have a great sense of empathy toward others who have faced their own unique challenges. I earned my master’s degree in counseling psychology and have worked in various academic settings in addition to doing in-home and online counseling with people of all ages and backgrounds. My personal attributes, education, and training have led to many successes in helping clients transform their thinking, behavior, and lives.
What should someone know about working with you?
The therapeutic relationship between the clinician and client is so important! During your initial intake session, I focus on getting to know you and building rapport and trust. I gather background information, ask about your goals, and discuss what you want to achieve from therapy. I want to learn all about you, your hopes and expectations, and your motivation level for working with me on making some necessary changes. Setting goals or having an action plan is key so that progress and growth can be monitored during your therapy. In our ongoing sessions, I am laid-back and nonjudgmental in my approach and may suggest some homework when appropriate. I am a great encourager and I aim to help you develop and showcase your strengths. Together, we will work to understand the origins of your overwhelming emotions, create some self-care practices and goals for you, and develop coping skills to help you feel better. We will work toward your vision of happiness and contentment.
What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?
I am ecstatic that online therapy is becoming more accepted and accessible! Many people live busy lives and have hectic schedules. Telehealth provides a convenient opportunity for people to engage in therapy from the comfort of their home (often with flexible scheduling). I have seen clients being more open and committed to the therapeutic experience since venturing online in a safe HIPAA-compliant setting.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering therapy?
Balancing life’s pressures and demands can feel overwhelming and the struggle to keep up when experiencing setbacks and hurt can be quite challenging. Seeking help is courageous and a sign of strength. People often think that therapy is simply talking about your problems to a therapist; in reality, more is involved. Therapy involves exploring feelings within a safe and confidential relationship and setting, psychological education, between session tasks, making changes, learning and implementing coping strategies, and building awareness of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Therapy is a process, and it does require some effort. The work can be life-altering and it results in a greater sense of awareness, accomplishment, and overall wellness.
