What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I always wondered why people do what they do, so I decided to study psychology while I was in school at UNC. Then, in my 20s, I started counseling to help me work through a career transition. I found the process informative, insightful, and terrifically supportive. As I transitioned from Wall Street to the NBA, where I worked for 18 years, I continued to go to individual therapy and group counseling. Due to the positive and supportive experiences I had, I eventually became interested in assisting others as I myself was helped. I went back to school and made the shift to counselor, focusing on the stresses of business professionals to help them become better equipped to reach their goals and live more fulfilling lives.
What should someone know about working with you?
I assist individuals in identifying barriers to success. Through a contextual discussion, my clients and I dig into what’s getting in the way of their goals and then design strategies to reach their objectives. By working through issues, relieving work-related stress is possible. People fear that without the pressure of stress, they can’t succeed. However, the opposite is true: Reduced stress allows people to make clearer choices. This furthers their work in ways they may not have even imagined, and it allows for greater achievement of personal goals and a more fulfilling life.
How does collaboration with other providers inform your work?
As a person who works with a professional sports team, I appreciate the importance and the benefits of collaboration. To stimulate ideas, expand our learning, or lean on specialized supports, joining with others to help in the care of an individual is a tremendous asset for any practitioner or teammate.
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to try therapy?
For those hesitant to try therapy, I would encourage you to take a leap of faith. We all have moments or situations that are a lot for us to handle alone—take a chance on yourself and reach out to those who can help guide and support you during this period. The hope is, through the process, you can gain insight, not feel so alone with what you are going through, and build a greater sense of empowerment for change. Taking a chance on therapy and making changes will help you feel better about yourself and the possibilities of building a more fulfilling life.
What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?
I am most excited about the success and positive views people are increasingly sharing about their experiences with therapy. Folks are now coming forward with their own stories regarding the benefits of working through situations in life with a counselor—stories that were previously kept in the shadows. As more and more individuals share their successes, others are starting to see the terrific value of talking with therapists and counselors. Therapy can help people build less stressful, more fulfilling, and happier lives.
