What was your path to becoming a therapist?
I was introduced to the counseling profession in college and shortly after taking my first course, I knew this career was the right fit for me. I have a great passion for learning about human behavior and helping and supporting others. In addition, as a person of color, I became acutely aware of the stigma around mental health and grew interested in working on destigmatizing mental health within my family and community. Outside of my practice, I have worked in a nonprofit organization supporting clients with ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicidality through individual, group, and family therapy. Throughout my career, I have received training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), neurocounseling, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), internal family systems (IFS), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
What should someone know about working with you?
During our first sessions, I will focus on getting to know you and building a therapeutic relationship with you. I believe that therapeutic rapport is a major indicator of the progress you can make in therapy. I will work with you on achieving your therapy goals. In order to track progress, I may use data-based work and/or frequent check-ins. Further, there are different key factors that I notice about you and how you’re benefiting from working with me. Not all need to be present but some hints of progress show up if you notice you feel less anxious, depressed, sad, stressed, and/or symptomatic, if you notice you’re feeling better overall, if you are practicing and improving coping skills outside of therapy, if you are sharing more in therapy sessions, and/or if you’re feeling and thinking differently about things in your life than you did when you started working with me.
What do you do to continue learning and building competencies as a provider?
I attend training throughout the year to ensure I am up-to-date on the therapeutic modalities I practice and other topics that can help me grow as a clinician. I also read monthly journals, articles, and books on mental health. Specifically, I am interested in learning about different coping strategies to help support my clients as well as techniques to maintain cultural competency.
How do your core values shape your approach to therapy?
I strongly believe that people are resilient and able to overcome any life struggle. Therapy can be a great medium to achieve this goal. As a therapist and a person of color, I understand that there are many facets to a person. I am committed to learning from my clients and creating a safe space to discuss any topic.
